You’ve probably heard about the end of the world on May 21 (And since we’re all reading this, we know that it wasn’t true, since we’re all still here.) And May 21 wasn’t the first date to be thrown out there. We have all heard that 2012 is the end based off the Mayan calendar. Unfortunately, as these dates come and go and nothing happens, these instances don’t help the credibility of Christian’s in the world.
Biblically, what do we know about these dates? I think these verses sum it up quite nicely:
Matthew 24:42-44 ~ Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
I think it’s pretty clear that no one will know when the Lord is coming. It might have been May 21, it might be today, it might 100 years from now. So when you see those end time “prophesies”, remember those verses and how no man knows the real time of our Lord’s coming.
There is more to the verses, however. If you continue where we left off at Matthew 24 you read this:
Verses 45-51 ~
“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Just because we do not know the hour of Judgment Day, doesn’t mean we sit around waiting for it. We need to constantly be working for God here on earth, and focusing on Heavenly things instead of Earthly ones. For whether He comes in our lifetime or our great grandkids’, it is our job to do so.
So there are my thoughts on the end of the world. I think it’s important to remember that ultimately God is in control, and to always go back to His word to see what He says, instead of what the rest of the world does.
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
That is the last verse of Francis Scott Key’s famous song. A beautiful song 🙂
